The Story of Creation: Unity and DualityWritten by Uros Muluk
Once, I heard a story about the beginning of Creation. I had been longing to hear such a story, a meaningful explanation of Life, as long as I can remember. I loved it as much as I love Buddhism or Advaita - the Indian classic philosophy of non-duality. In fact, the story is probably compatible with all religions that propose that everything comes from the One. It goes like this:
In the beginning ... oops, we can't really say "beginning" because Consciousness is timeless, hence it has no beginning. Okay, it's a story, so let it be ... In the beginning there was ONE Consciousness. This ONE was the Absolute Reality, self-contained Consciousness, the pure Bliss ... It was everything, so it also had everything ... everything but one thing ... it wasn't able to experience itself. How come? Because it was ONE. :) It takes TWO to experience: the experiencer and the experienced. Therefore, the ONE decided to create a new reality, so that it would be able to experience itself. This is how the Universe was created. The Universe came from the ONE and, in the Absolute Truth, it still is ... the ONE. Yet, in the relative truth of experiencing this Universe - in duality - there are TWO sides:
- On one side, there is the Seed of the ONE, that timeless ONE HEART: the experiencer, and
- On the other side, there is the projection of the newly created duality: the experienced.
Okay, let's see what this means in practice. "I am Uroš" I say. This "I" can be two very different things: the "I" that belongs to Uroš – a nice guy who represents one particular aspect of the ONE in the hologram known as the world: place and time. We can name it the imaginary "I". Then, there's the True "I": the one who actually sent Uroš here ... or, to go a bit deeper, the "I" who is always present Here and Now and experiences Uroš and the rest of the world.
At this point, I'd like to share with you one notion from the book I Am That by the Advaita master Sri Nisargadatta Maharaj of Mumbai that defined my perspective described above:
"The very act of perceiving shows that you are not what you perceive."
To put it in other words: I AM the ONE who is aware of Uroš's body, Uroš's thoughts, Uroš's emotions, Uroš's feelings, and of everything Uroš sees, hears, tastes, smells and touches. Since I AM the ONE who is aware of all this, the logical implication would be that "I" AM NOT Uroš's body, Uroš's thoughts, Uroš's emotions, Uroš's feelings, and everything Uroš sees, hears, tastes, smells and touches. I am not Uroš. I am the ONE who is aware of Uroš and of all his experiences.
Why am I bothering you with all this? Why is this so important to understand? Because it transmutes our identification. And why is that so important? Because if we identify ourselves with That which we really ARE, and we stop mistakenly identifying ourselves with that which we ARE NOT, then we are free and we suffer no longer.
We realize that we ARE THE ONE, that we never left THE ONE, that what seemingly surrounds us, is just a (wonderful!) illusion, just a journey. (Well, not just a journey ... it is, in fact, a sacred experience that WE wanted and WE created.) We realize that WE are not alone, that WE are made of Pure Love and WE are all the children of THE ONE.
"Always remember deep in your heart that all is well and everything is unfolding as it should. There are no mistakes anywhere, at any time. What appears to be wrong is simply your own false imagination."
~Advaita master Robert Adams
And it is the purpose of Muluk.net that we should all remember this. Now you probably better understand why I am able to say "I love You, my brother and my sister" wholeheartedly and completely shamelessly. :) We Are One!
To give you an even better idea of what comes from Unity and what comes solely from Duality, I want to share with you a table of comparisons that came straight from my heart on 6 Imix (13 Dec 2010). When reading this, please bear in mind that this is NOT a list of good and bad ... there is nothing wrong with duality ... on the contrary: "in the beginning," WE created duality in order to enjoy this experience of Life, and that is all of its aspects. But if take these experiences too personally, they can also hurt us and then it helps to know that they're all just an illusion, a projection, a mirage - on the screen of our Consciousness.
You will see that both types of polarities, described in the table, manifest themselves in duality. The only difference is that the Unity qualities feed love and happiness that You Are, and the duality qualities feed the fear of separation that You Are NOT. My point here is to just be aware of this discrimination, so we can identify with the right thing ... err ... that is: the left thing in the table below. :)
